Zoe on guard duty

Witness Zoe on guard duty while I weed in my back yard. I tried so hard to get a photo of her when she's REALLY into it (barking frantically, throwing herself at the glass door, doing her best to look like a scary 7 1/2 pound beast). As I have gathered, she is only frantic if she thinks I am unaware of interlopers. ie. She becomes particularly crazed if I am outside and she can see a stranger but can't see me, in which situation she assumes I am unaware and prime bait for an attack. Hence my inability to really capture her in full guard duty mode.

I love the last photo, taken when she was caught off-guard and therefore got herself tangled up in the curtain. I caught her just as she was making her way out. My little guardian. Gotta love her!

Oh, and yes, I really need to clean my windows!

Wednesday: Date with Sydney

The first two were taken pre fussy baby saga.

The last one was taken during my first effort to appease the fussy baby. Attempt was successful, yet brief. I really took this photo because I made the hat Sydney's wearing (I'm shameless). She was giggling, but you can't really see it because she's got her hands in her face. I can see it in her eyes though.

My New Addiction: Laura's Wholesome Junk Food

These little "cookies" are delicious! Like my friend Kerry says, it's hard not to eat the whole container in one sitting! Laura's Wholesome Junk Food is all-natural; contains no hydrogenated oils, artificial colors or flavors; and is cholesterol-free. And for you celiacs out there, LWJF is also virtually gluten-free. (See their gluten and allergen test results).

The negatives are limited, albeit annoying: LWJF is overpriced (average cost is $5.99 for a 7 oz container, approx. 14 bite-lettes) and relatively hard to find. I've only found LWJF at Whole Foods and Harris Teeter. Oh, and the bite-lettes look a bit like little mounds of poo. Photo of my favorite, Grandma's Gingerbread below.

Still, you know this stuff is likely to be good for you - it was invented by a real medical doctor. Even the biggest junk food junkies will love this stuff. When I gave one to my niece (7-year-old Abby), she loved it! I guess she's not the best example as she enjoys pretty nutritious foods for the most part, but I'd be surprised if even the pickiest of eaters don't love LWJF.

Recycled glass earrings

I am a member of Aveda's Pure Privilege program, and these were my first rewards purchase. Joining Pure Privilege is worth it, even if you only shop there once or twice a year. The one-time sign-up fee is only $10 and for that you get a free gift. When I joined I got a small cosmetic bag filled with travel sizes of Shampure shampoo and conditioner, as well as foot and hand lotion. (Shampure ROCKS by the way).

As a member, you earn 10 points for each dollar you spend. You also have the opportunity a few times a year to get double points on purchases. These earrings were "purchased" for 2500 points, but at least 750 of those were earned via double points. So while I would not spend $175 on these earrings, I was happy to earn them for my purchases equivalent to $175 in Aveda products over more than a year and a half!

As you can see by the label, the earrings were produced by Smart Glass, but the glass used was Aveda bottle glass.

I love that they are relatively unique and made from recycled materials. You can choose from a few different colors, I think there is a moss green color and also clear. But aside from these earrings, Aveda offers many wonderful rewards for being a valued customer. I encourage anyone who uses Aveda products to join!

Heels 45, Eagles 24

Due to Monday's dog attack, yesterday's game was attended by Todd, dad and myself. Having dad along was a lot of fun, although I'm not sure if he really enjoyed himself. I have no idea how long it had been since dad had attended a live football game. When I asked mom about it, she said it had been years, and I was not surprised. I would have LOVED it if she could've come with us, too. That would have made the day a full-on, full-blooded Glazener event! But mom had her hands full, so the diversion wasn't manageable.

Anyway, despite the on and off rain, our usual Tar Heel fan neighbors with seats behind us came to the game. (I find it rather hilarious that none of us know the names of the adults, only the children). Taylor (4-5 yr old) brought a card that she made for Abby, and the look on her face when I told her Abby hadn't come to the game was priceless, yet heartbreaking.

Her sister Riley (who slept through most of the Notre Dame game) was NOT a happy girl yesterday. She wailed and wailed. Since Todd and I were listening to Woody via radio (and therefore our ears were plugged with headphones), we didn't really notice or care. But poor dad couldn't help but repeatedly turn around, glancing at said child and her parents, wondering when the screaming might stop. I wanted to grab him and say, "Hey, Abby's been a pain before, too," but I let it go because I think our rear neighbors already knew that we accept their children's kicks, bumps and screams unconditionally.

So, the game started out rough. I was beside myself, not even able to blame the weather for the UNC flubs. But then the Heels came back, and with a vengeance! Marvin Austin made a tackle that would make the best of all coaches proud. Casey Barth kicked a perfect game. Cameron Sexton threw for 238 yards, and Hakeem Nicks had eight catches for 139 yards and three touchdowns.

But then Nicks added a fourth touchdown in the fourth quarter, making him the first Tar Heel to score four touchdowns in a game since Ronnie McGill scored four times against Furman in 2006. Like I said, exciting stuff!

The photo was taken on the drive home. As I've said many time before, my camera is very unsophisticated, but I was also dealing with my dad's maneuvering through stop-and-go traffic. Anyway, there was a pretty nice rainbow stretched over Meadowmont.

Quote of the day

"Democracy is...the conviction that there are extraordinary possibilities in ordinary people."

-Harry Emerson Fosdick in Harper's Monthly Magazine (November 1925)

Spider Zoe

Spider Zoe is not a happy Spider Dog. It was almost impossible to get a photo of her in this costume. Even at size extra-small, she can wiggle her way out of it pretty easily. I don't think I'll be torturing her by making her wear it on Halloween!
Although there is no resemblance, I can't help but think of Homer Simpson's Spider Pig when I say, "Spider Zoe."
Spider Pig, Spider Pig,
Does whatever a Spider Pig Does
Can he swing, from a web
No he can't, he's a pig
Lookooouuut! He is a Spider Pig!

A little pain=reaction=MONEY

For those of you who don't know the history of my experience with the Pedigree ads (Oliver gets adopted is my favorite!) I feel I must share.

The first ad I saw in this campaign brought me to tears - meaning I was hysterically crying by the end of the THIRTY SECOND ad. I showed it to my assistant with the same result. We were heartbroken.

But when the "Oliver gets adopted" ad came out, I was beside myself. Upon seeing it begin for the first time on the TV, I assumed the worst and had already begun to tear up. Then...What a wonderful surprise! I am not afraid to admit that I've watched the "Oliver gets adopted" ad at least 150 times. I LOVE IT. I want that type of happiness for every dog out there.

Casey Update

Casey returned home last night after another day at the vet. He has two "drainage tubes" that will stay in place until Friday. These are supposed to help keep his puncture wounds free of fluid. They say he will be okay (thank goodness!)

Todd, Maria and Abby are supposed to come to Chapel Hill Friday for Midnight Madness, and if they do they will bring Casey, too. Of course their travel will depend on Casey's progress.

We all appreciate your good thoughts while Casey recovers!

For the backstory, read BEWARE of DOG.

Oliver gets adopted

My favorite commercial ever!

BEWARE of DOG

Just before 10 a.m. yesterday I got an e-mail reply from my brother that contained some disturbing news. Following his very brief inquiry in regards to my previous message, he wrote, "Maria and Casey were attacked by a dog this morning while running. Both are at the doctor/vet. Maria has some bite wounds on her hands and Casey has some bite injuries and was heavily favoring his right front leg. Both seemed OK but shaken. Will let you know more when they are out. We know who's dog it is now but have only spoken briefly with the owner. Todd" end of message (Casey is my brother's Sheltie and Maria is his wife).

I thought, "WHAT?!" and immediately called him. I was relieved he was not with a patient so that I could get more information, but at the time he was still not certain as to the extent of Maria or Casey's injuries. About 4 1/2 hours later I got the following update, "Maria back from the doctor with her hand mumified with gauze, steri-strips and antibiotic Rx. Casey got a morphine dose and has 4 puncture wounds that need stiches; haven't checked the leg yet as they were still closing the wounds when Maria last spoke to them. Dog owner apparently called animal control this morning because when Maria spoke to them they already were aware of the incident and told her that the dog's shots were current. She's now waiting for a call back from one of the officers."

At that point I was getting anxious as I hadn't been able to reach Maria. After calling three times in a row without leaving messages, she called me back. She still did not know for certain the extent of Casey's injuries. The vet suspected that one of the bites may have punctured a lung, and she was also uncertain about his leg injuries. She suspected a break or some torn ligaments/tendons. He was sedated and she was waiting to hear back from the vet.

From what I now understand, the events occurred something like this: Maria and Casey were jogging in a nearby neighborhood at about 6:30 a.m. Apparently the "attack dog" jumped the fence in its back yard and darted straight for Casey. Having a firm hold on Casey's leg, the dog began to drag Casey away from Maria. Maria tried to break the dogs apart - all the while screaming at the top of her lungs, "Somebody please help me!" to no avail. Her shrieking eventually drove the dog away, and she carried Casey home to get Todd's help. After leaving Casey with Todd, she went back to the neighborhood to try to find out who the dog belonged to. She found a helpful neighbor, but on their way to the owner's house the dog came at both of them again. (Maria said the dog was relatively Bailey's size, 45-48lbs, but a little taller than Bailey, who stands about 22" tall at the withers). Maria eventually alerted the owners that their dog was loose and had attacked her, although the news did not seem to surprise them. UPDATE: Maria has since revised her description of the dog (not surprising since Bailey's appearance is deceptive - people always think he weighs much more than he does). She found out the dog was a St. Bernard Shepherd mix, and probably weighed closer to 80 lbs.

At the time of my last update from my mom, I was told that Casey came home for the night, but will return to the vet this morning for sutures. The "attack dog" was put down yesterday. I can't help but be a little sad, as I hate to hear about any animal being put to death. I know Maria feels the same way - she probably blames the owners for the attack rather than the dog. (This is a woman who goes ridiculously out of her way to help animals in need. She picks up stray dogs on the side of the road - no matter how big, small or dirty - in order to protect them from moving vehicles and help them find their way home. She is the equivalent of a doggie fairy godmother).

Some good news is that Casey should likely make a full recovery and the owners of the "attack dog" came over to Todd's last night to tell them "send us the bill" for Casey's care. I'm just thankful that Maria and Casey are relatively in one piece, home and now safe and sound!

Closing thoughts:
1) a co-worker recommended that joggers/walkers always carry a cell phone for when emergencies like this happen;
2) please keep your dog(s) on a leash when not in a secured area (I am guilty of not doing this with Zoe, shame on me);
3) if your dog is over 35 pounds and/or has a lot of spring (like Zoe), a 5 ft fence is NOT tall enough!

Beagle Houdini

In honor of my Bailey Houdini, I give you Beagle Houdini...

Monday Dog

Although I took this photo on Saturday night, the perturbed look on Zoe's face reflects how I feel on most Monday mornings. I'm pretty sure she really gave me that look because I made her spend most of the weekend with Emma.

Or maybe my bitterness over the Tar Heels' loss to UVA rubbed off on her. Grrrr...

Regardless, she and I will both get over it.

Real Simple card wheel

I've been using my Real Simple card wheel for over two years now, and every time I use it I get a comment like, "that is really cool - where did you get it?"

I keep my frequently used cards (not credit cards) such as the following: Blockbuster, DSW, REI, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, AAA and my UNC General Alumni Association card in my wheel. I only keep cards in it that can be scanned. I don't keep cards that need to be swiped in it because it can be hard to get the cards out of the sleeves.

I suppose my real love for my card wheel stems from my bad luck with keychain cards. You see, most of the keychain cards I've used have either become bent beyond use or I've lost them. I keep my keychain cards on a separate jumpring on a carabiner clip with my keys. More than once the separate ring of keychain cards has fallen off without me noticing it. Hence my preference to keep my "frequent buyer" cards together somewhere separate from my keys.

I bought one of these for a couple of my friends, but I don't think they've used them. I don't know why because I couldn't live without mine! This little gem is well worth the $4-5 price tag. Available at Target stores.

Cameron Kelley Parker

My Michigan roommates Jodi and Kelly had a baby girl in early June, and Jodi finally sent me some photos yesterday. I hadn't gotten any since the birth when Kelly sent me a "just born" shot (I told him I'd kill him if he didn't), so I felt the need to share. For those of you who are sports fans but might not be familiar with certain team logos, those are NOT Dook hats on Jodi and Cameron's heads...

Me Rambo

I am so bummed that I don't have a photo for this post, but it's my fault that I forgot where I put my camera on Wednesday night.

Our previous Science Editor at EHP and now great friend, Jim, came over to my house yesterday with his pressure washer to clean my DIRTY house. I had asked him the day before how long he thought it would take and he'd said about three hours. That was before he saw my house. We started at the back, and it didn't take long for me to see that Jim had underestimated the task. When he thought I wasn't looking I saw him shaking his head in frustration, as there were a few areas where the grime would just not let go. He kept saying we needed a taller ladder, but as I found out later, I don't think that would've helped much on the stubborn areas.

When we moved to the front I told him I thought I should get up on the roof, since proximity was definitely the key to success. (Many houses that aren't as filthy can probably be washed from the ground level with the highest pressure nozzle. Many houses are also not as dirty as mine was). Jim was a little hesitant to let me do that, but I insisted. When I first got up there I was pretty scared. I've never thought of myself as afraid of heights, but then again, I think it's all about circumstances. (I'm fine when I'm strapped into a seat on a roller coaster, but standing on the slanted roof of a two-story house with nothing to stop me from tumbling off head first is entirely different).

Once the roof was wet, I could go barefoot (it was hotter than Hades at first since it was 85 degrees), and the surface wasn't nearly as slick as I thought it would be. It didn't take me long to totally get into it. After a while, Jim yelled up, "I wish I had a camera!" so I told him to go in and get mine where I thought I'd left it. He couldn't find it - boo hiss!

I continued to blast away at the dirty panels and windows until my legs were rubber and my clothes were SOAKED. I looked like I'd jumped in a pool; the task took about five hours instead of three, and we didn't even get to clean the north side; but it was worth it because my house looks so much better!

Jim said he'd come back to clean the north side and do some brushing on the stubborn areas, but I won't blame him if he doesn't! The reason I titled this post "Me Rambo" is because while Jim and I packed up his stuff, I told him again how bummed I was that neither of us found my camera. He said, "Yeah, I would love to have a photo of Rambo Tracey on her roof with her super water gun!"

Bear Hug

Sydney gets a bear hug...so cute! I believe this was a gift from one of Kerry's relatives, either from or visiting Alaska. I had the hardest time trying to get a photo of the front of the onesie, but I did the best I could. Notice the wrap-around paws in the backside photo...

Seriously, who could resist giving that baby a bear hug?! I have to remind myself not to squeeze her to death. How I love her!

What took me so long?

Last night after work I visited the Parkwood Branch of the Durham County Library and received my very own library card. I don't think I've had a library card (other than my student IDs at UNC and MSU that served as my "library cards" while in school) since I was a little girl in Lewisville, and even then it was likely my mom's instead of mine. I vaguely remember such a card as being a flimsy, uncoated card with our name hand-written on one side. The card may have been yellow, beyond that I don't remember.

My new card is plastic like a credit card and has a bar code on it. My name does not appear on the card, other than my signature, which is almost completely illegible anyway.

I went to the library looking for a book suggested by my friend Shelly. When I told her I couldn't find said book in the Barnes & Noble, she told me she'd checked it out at her local library (thanks Shelly)! I can't believe it had never occurred to me to get a library card rather than throw money away on books, especially since I have read maybe one or two books more than once in my entire life.

I was pleased to find the suggested book, as well as another I found online that peaked my interest. I then browsed the fiction sections and looked for (but never found) the supposed DVD section. The Parkwood Branch is not the most complete collection of books, but there are two other branches close to my house, one of which is the Main Library.

I found and checked out "What Was She Thinking? [Notes on a Scandal]" by Zoë Heller and began reading it after I walked the doggies. I finished the book before going to bed - obviously it kept me entertained. Having seen the movie, "Notes on a Scandal," there was little left to the imagination, but I enjoyed the story even more because the main characters were already visually created for me via the film (Cate Blanchett as Sheba Hart and Judi Dench as Barbara Covett).

Now I can't wait to go back and check out more books that have been on my "want to read" list for months! I'm going to try to make myself wait until I've had time to read the other two books I checked out - both which I suspect will be far less entertaining as they are non-fiction books relating to allergies and other health issues - before grabbing another page-turner.

Any books to recommend? Please let me know!

Swingin' Sydney

Sydney duty last night was very brief. She was napping when I arrived, and I was instructed to wake her at 5:15 pm if she didn't on her own. She woke up, screaming, at 5:15 on the dot. I took her out of her crib and brought her downstairs - still screaming. I bounced her on my lap, tried to help her walk - still screaming. I felt horrible because she was REALLY crying, tears streaming down her chubby little cheeks.

So I grabbed my camera and took her outside to her swing. First I should mention that as soon as I closed the door to the garage she stopped screaming. Maybe she just wanted to go outside? I sat on Felton's little yellow coaster car, which I placed right in front of the swing, and pushed her back and forth for about 30 minutes. Then Robert (daddy) came home and she was all smiles.

I took at least a dozen photos, but the two below were my favorites.

In the first one, Sydney is reacting to my "talking" back to her. She makes the cutest noises - gurgling and cooing - and when she gets on a roll, I always try to imitate her (ie. talk balk to her). When she recognizes or becomes interested in my response, the face captured above is what I often see. Especially when paired with that grip she has on her yellow safety barrier, I think of this face as her, "Hey, I heard that! We're communicating!" face.

The second photo depicts a relatively new (at least to me) Sydney maneuver. She likes to reach out and grab my hand (or face, or hair), but even if she doesn't get a good grip on me, she is pleased when our hands meet. On the swing this is particularly fun because she reaches out as she swings forward and tries so hard to grab me on her way back. While some children may react in the exact opposite way, Sydney is tickled when she just brushes me but doesn't get a hold of me. I have no idea what is going through her head, but whatever makes her smile is fun for me!

The Stewarts come to Durham

Kile, Brent, Charlotte and Max were in town this past weekend, and despite a busy schedule for all of us, we managed to spend a decent amount of time together. On Saturday after the UNC game, I went to the Washington Duke Inn for a nightcap. I was so excited to find Charlotte and Max still awake when I arrived! Since I failed to get a photo taken with Kile when I visited her in September, I was determined to get one this visit.

The photo below was actually taken by Charlotte. Pretty good for a three-year-old, don't you think?

I believe the next one was taken by Brent, who probably couldn't wait for me to go home as he was half-sleeping the entire time I was there. Sorry Brent! Kile was doing her best to get Max to look at the camera.

The next was taken by Kile. I'm not sure what exactly Charlotte was doing here. Some kind of fabulous pose...

Last but not least for the photos, we have Max! The most super cute of the cuties. He is so photogenic and an angel to boot. He had a rough night, but managed to keep a smile on his face for almost the entire time.

After our late night catch up session, we met for Sunday brunch at Watt's Grocery. I'd never been there, but it came up as one of the top places for brunch in the area when I searched, and my friend Jeni had also recommended the food. The meal was absolutely delicious and perfectly portioned, but as Jeni indicated, the service was slightly lacking. In addition to being slow, I found our server to be a bit of a smart ass, and inappropriately so, but whatever.

I enjoyed the Huevos Rancheros: Local corn tortillas topped with red beans, sliced avocados, two fried eggs, salsa verde and served with pico de gallo. Kile ordered the same (but with the jalapeños) and we were both pleased with our selection.

As Kile suggested after our experience Sunday morning, if you have plans to have brunch at WG, get there early. They open at 11:00 a.m. Kile and family arrived at 10:45 and there was already a line. I believe they were seated at about 11:15. Thank goodness I'd called her to tell her what I wanted to eat (I was running late as usual) because had I not, our food might not have reached our table before 12:15.

Since I hate being harassed by waitstaff throughout my entire dining experience, I will say that I enjoyed an almost completely "interruption-free" meal. While our guy could've been a bit more attentive (in a silent manner: filling glasses, bringing our check) I appreciated his not checking in on us every 5 minutes. But nobody's perfect, and Kile and I both agreed that we want to return to WG for another meal!

Can't wait to see you again next weekend Kile!

Tar Heels 29, Fighting Irish 24

Saturday was a BIG game, and while I was worried throughout the entire game, the Heels came out on top. The stands were packed - 60,500 fans - which tied as the third highest attendance in Kenan history.

Check out all the Carolina BLUE!

Saturdays victory also gave the Heels their best season start since 1997, their first win as a ranked team in the AP top 25 since January 1998, and their first victory over Notre Dame since 1960!

At the half, the score was 17-9, with all of our points coming from Casey Barth's talent for scoring field goals. Then things quickly began to go in our favor up until the last few seconds - literally. The Tar Heels even rushed the field, thinking they had won, only to be called back into play for the final three seconds again. While the final play was being reviewed, Maria and I took a few photos.

We don't appear to be stressed out, but there's one with Todd in the background, where he looks a bit concerned!

So the day was fabulous. I tailgated with Kerry and friends, the weather was pleasant, I got to visit the John W. Pope Stadium Box (thanks Joseph!) and the Tar Heels won! But the day was also LONG. Post-college roommate Kile was in town with her family, so after I got home from the game I went to visit her at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham. I made sure to leave my CAROLINA tshirt on for my trip to DOOK country. Will post photos from that visit later on...

My one-of-a-kind handbag

In May of this year, I traveled to Michigan to visit my dear friends Jodi and Kelly in Lansing. As a treat to ourselves, Jodi and I scheduled facials at the Douglas J Aveda Institute in East Lansing on Grand River Avenue. What a choice idea – it was fabulously indulgent. But the point of this “cool stuff” post is my bag.

While Jodi and I waited our turn to be pampered, we checked out the merchandise at the front of the store. They had a coat rack filled with odd-looking bags that drew both Jodi’s and my attention. Upon closer examination, not only did we find that they were on sale (50% off!), but that they were super-cool bags, each completely unique, made from recycled billboards. We both immediately committed to purchasing one.

In the grand scheme of things, I wouldn’t care too much for this bag: there is only one pocket (which is a flat one sewn to the inside panel that doesn’t securely hold anything) and there is no way to close the bag at the top (no snap or zip). But on top of the cool points gained by being one-of-a-kind, this bag is also my choice when attending certain events, like UNC football games.

The bag is basically vinyl, so you can wipe anything off of it. I can put it on the floor anywhere and not worry about what it might pick up since I can wipe it down with Clorox wipes when I get home! Since I am a self-admitted class-A germaphobe, this perk is KEY to my love of this bag. As an item born of re-use, it gets an automatic thumbs up from me! If you’re interested, you can find more information about these bags at the Relan web site.

FYI: Approximate dimensions of my bag are 11" wide x 13.5" tall, 4" depth (unstretched). the straps (if held up rigidly) measure 11" from shoulder to the top of the bag.

Pure Bailey

As I mentioned in an earlier post today, Bailey often appears to bark for absolutely no reason. It's like he can't help himself. The image below is from a birthday card Kerry sent to me years ago. I've kept it on my bulletin board in the kitchen, with a note next to it that reads, "Pure Bailey." Sadly, it is so true.

The Lawnmower Man

As mentioned last week, on Thursdays I telework and normally get a ton of work done due to the lack of interruptions and distractions in the office. Yesterday – or at least yesterday morning – that was not the case thanks to aforementioned crazy neighbor (aka recycling captain, psycho weedwhacker, tiny dog tormentor). I will refer to him as CN for the remainder of this post.

While I often find it convenient that CN cuts my grass (especially since he uses his own lawnmower and his own gas), there are occasions when his kind deed is unwelcome. For example, I do not appreciate it when he decides that “operation neighborhood lawn trim” is to take place on Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. I call it “operation neighborhood lawn trim” (ONLT) because he also cuts other neighbors’ lawns, so when he starts at 6:30, he’s not done until around 9:30 because he has a mower with a bag that often has to be emptied. Houses are very close to each other in this neighborhood, so I hear the mower the entire time.

So, yesterday morning ONLT kicked off at 7:30. Since Zoe's sense of hearing rivals that of dolphins, she was immediately on full enemy alert: frantically pacing between my bedroom windows, barking her head off, jumping into the window sills and pawing the glass. It goes without saying that I got out of bed at 7:32, even though I could've slept until almost 9:00...GRRRR!

Thank goodness I am usually gone to work when CN carries out ONLT, because this is how the rest of the morning went...

Zoe made wild laps around the house, attacking each window and the kitchen's sliding glass door as she followed CN on his mowing path. Of course Bailey barked the whole time because Zoe was barking. Bailey was comic relief in this instance because I really don't think he knew what he was barking at. He didn't even get off of his bed. He wasn't even barking in the direction of the noise OR Zoe. I should really call him "My Clueless Houdini."

At one point, I surprised CN when I threw back the kitchen curtain to find him taunting Zoe, who was violently throwing herself at the glass door. She's only 7 1/2 pounds, but the door was shaking. He really thought his actions were funny. I did NOT agree.

I'm starting to realize that the following two things are in order:

1. CN needs a serious talking to, or a good scare from Zoe (off-leash).
2. I'm going to have to start mowing my own lawn again.

Getting reacquainted

I had the privilege of drawing Sydney duty last evening, and I was ecstatic that she accepted my presence quickly and even flashed quite a few smiles for me! I can't take credit for the photo below, as I snagged it from Kerry's Snapfish album. I didn't have my camera with me, but I wanted to include a photo of a happy Sydney, and I love the retro dress, too!

I honestly think Sydney might just go from stationary baby to walking champ. She hasn't begun to crawl, but with a little assistance she walks like a pro. And she WANTS to walk.

If I sat her on the sofa or on the floor, she cried and slapped her hands at the floor until I put her on her feet. She tried several times to pick herself up (via grasping at my pant leg or nearby furniture) but she just doesn't have the muscles and coordination required yet. It won't be long though!

When Sydney started to get tired (rubbing of eyes was intense) she became very cranky. I tried several things to appease her, but the only thing that worked was putting her in her Jump and Go. (Side note: In response to the many negative reviews I found for this product, I want to point out that the item is not called "leave your kid alone swing." Depending on the child's age, obviously some supervision is going to be required).

The Jump and Go is perfect for Sydney. She loves to "dance" (bounce up and down while propping herself up on something sturdy), so the illusion that she is dancing or walking on her own is quite pleasing to her. She was entirely happy - bouncing, spinning and swinging - until mommy came home. Then she was ecstatic!

How many bottles?

I wonder how many AVEDA bottles these caps can help to make?

Almost this entire bag is from my dad. When he's not practicing dentistry, he's walking...and picking up trash and recyclables as he goes.

He's the greenest man I know! Thanks dad!

Cool Stuff: Abitax gadget case

This post category might not end up with a ton of entries, but I've gotten enough inquiries about some of my uncommon goods that I thought I would share the details (and my LOVE of these products) here. The first "cool stuff" post is dedicated to my beloved Abitax gadget case. Abitax is a Japanese company for which I have not been able to find much information on the internet in English. I began researching the company after seeing my friend Blair's case when I visited her in Los Angeles in June of 2007. I immediately fell in love with the little pouch and wanted to know where I could get one. Unfortunately, I didn't ask her about it until after I'd returned home and failed to find one online that could be delivered for less than a $10 shipping charge. The freakin' thing doesn't even weigh 3 ounces, so a $10 shipping charge is ridiculous!

(The photo to the left is of my case with my phone inside it. You can see that the antenna, which measures approximately 1 1/4", barely sticks out of the case.)

After I e-mailed Blair about it, she explained that hers had been a Christmas gift from her husband, but she knew where he got it. While it just so happened to be the ridiculous shipping charge store, she generously offered to buy one for me in-store and ship it to me (THANKS BLAIR!) As it turned out, she sent me two (one for me and one for Kerry) and charged us nothing...what a fabulous friend.

While the cases may appear to be overpriced (the cheapest I've found for the small size is $29.75, current price on sale at Rare Device) these babies are totally worth it. They are constructed of felted wool, and each comes with two interchangeable clips - one is a flat clip (pictured both front left and back below) and the other is a carabiner-style clip (pictured below in aqua/blue color with my phone on top). Obviously from the photos you can see I now have two of these cases. I ended up purchasing one from the ridiculous shipping store, along with another for a friend as a birthday gift.

The size of the small case varies on the internet, but I measured mine (flat, not including attached clip) as 2 7/8" wide by 4 1/2" tall. My phone (LG VX8300) fits perfectly and has never fallen out.

As I only have a cell phone (no land line in casa a la Tracey), this case has made my life much easier because my phone is almost always on hand. The clips are easy to change, but I usually keep the flat clip on because I can attach it to the waist of my gym shorts, the side of my purse or the pocket of my pants.

The bad news is that Abitax availability is scarce in the US (haven't even found them on ebay). The only US online stores I've found are linked above (Rare Device and Tortoise Life), and as formerly mentioned, shipping isn't cheap. You can risk ordering via the Abitax site, but I didn't and wouldn't. However, now that I have two of my own, I recommend getting over the shipping charges or if you have friends in Brooklyn, Los Angeles or San Francisco, have one shipped to you via your friend. You won't be sorry - but if you are - I'd probably buy yours from you!

FYI: these also come in a larger size, which one site described as a mitten without a thumb (to give you an idea of the size). I have not seen the large size first hand.

Sunset playground and a Tonka truck ride

Last night after my regular workout I was happy to find Kerry, along with Felton and Sydney at the neighborhood playground. I was even more excited about the fact that Sydney did not wail in terror as soon as she saw me. She is my goddaughter but not fond of people she doesn't see every day. Thankfully, last night she extended a reprieve. No screaming, and I tried to tell myself that her hand pats at the bench next to her were an invitation for me to sit by her, although I did not risk it!

I did manage to get some pics of Felton playing big brother. Apparently Sydney's only interest in the playground involved eating the mulch, so Kerry decided to sit her in the Tonka and let Felton push her around in it. This worked out well!

Once Felton reached the sandbox, he left Sydney beached on the edge and went on his way. I got a cute photo and then tried to push her back to mommy myself. Felton immediately turned and said, "Don't push her!" Apparently he wanted to do it himself, and soon returned to carry out the task.

In the last photo, I'm not sure what Felton was doing, but I loved the look of concentration on his face. It reminded me of when he crouches to contemplate a shot (like daddy) during a golf game.

Tar Heels 38, Huskies 12

The Heels were ON last night! The highlight of the game for me was watching defensive lineman Marvin Austin score a touchdown. Those guys aren't meant to run, but he sure did.

After searching for Bailey for most of the morning, I was due for some fun and games, and NO dogs. Bro, Maria, Abby and I met up with the Cuthrells for some pre-game tailgating. Brendan and Jackson (JC and Corey's kids) are adorable, and quite the mischevious ones, as you can see below. First we have Brendan, Jackson and Abby. Then there's Jackson with "blue icing lipstick." He was quite methodical in rubbing his cupcake across his lips in order to get the maximum amount of icing possible on his mouth.

Then we have the ladies: Maria, myself and Corey. Corey brought along some kind of fabulous liquor that tastes like sweet tea and had a pretty good kick. It was delicious - thanks Corey!

Abby and me, waiting for the rest of the fans to arrive.

I put some of my treasured Lemon Lip Butter (C.O. Bigelow, Bath & Body Works) on Abby so she felt the need to pucker up for the camera. She wanted us all to do the same, and we did take pictures but they're not posted here because Abby's "pucker face" is much cuter than any of the rest of ours!

Abby trekked almost all the way around Kenan Stadium with me to visit Kerry and Robert, whose seats are almost directly opposite ours, but the path there is rather convoluted. I might not have been so irritated about this if I hadn't watched a "security guard" let a plain-clothesed man and his child cut through the end zone, only to immediately tell me, "No, you can't go through here." Per his instructions, I then had to weave through a sea of drunken students (not to put them down, I was one of them once, but would prefer to shield Abby from them). Abby was a champ, never any less than the happiest kid on a field trip, but I must say that I found it preposterous that in order to reach a destination closer in length than 1/2 the football field, we were forced to walk at least 250 yards to reach my friends.

As Abby and I were walking back to our seats, I think we missed two Tar Heel touchdowns. We definitely missed at least one, because she and I heard the fireworks and the announcer screaming "Touchdown, Carolina!" With all the cheering, Abby looked up at me and said, "Something good must've just happened!" I told her, "indeed," and then we proceeded to yell, "Touchdown, Carolina!" over and over. Then Abby stopped me to say, "We're gonna win this game!" And she was right.

My little Houdini

Bailey has just returned to Caroline's house (where I'm dogsitting) after another long morning of wild and free abandon. You'd think I would've learned by now that Caro's fence cannot contain Bailey. I found a new hole, one that doesn't look big enough for Bailey to fit through, but apparently it is.

I spent a couple of hours looking for him, all the while drawing odd looks from folks passing by wondering why I would be carrying a leash with no dog on the end. After resigning myself to defeat, I walked back to Caroline's, paced for a while and then just as soon as I sat down on the couch my phone rang. It was a nice man named Jay who said he had Bailey in his yard. I nearly fainted when he told me he lives in Meadowmont, meaning that Bailey had to not only travel a few miles to get to Jay's house, but he also had to cross FOUR lanes of traffic on highway 54! Therefore, Bailey is known as Houdini both for his ability to break free from almost anywhere, and his ability to evade death by motor vehicle.

I took the photo above soon after returning with Bailey. I can't believe he went straight to the back door, as if I would let him back out there!

I'm always grateful when he's found, but right now I'm still thinking he's an a**hole. At least he's tired and sleeping like a log right now so I can take a nap before heading out to tailgate this afternoon. GO HEELS!

Quote of the day

"Study hard and work hard. Play hard, keep an open mind, take pride in yourself, in your school, in what you produce, and the way you help others. If you make mistakes, make sure you learn from them & never give up. Stay strong to the finish."

Eve Carson Memorial 5K

Jen and I are going to WALK in this on November 15th. If you're interested, check out the details on the official site. A brief description follows:

The Eve Carson Memorial 5K for Education is a fundraiser for the Eve Marie Carson Junior Year Merit Scholarship Fund which was established to provide a one year merit scholarship for Juniors at UNC. A third of the funds will also be split between FirstBook, an organization that distributes books to underpriveledged children, and Clyde Erwin Elementary School to support their literacy programming. We hope you will join us for a run through the beautiful UNC campus in memory of Eve!

Carolina Blue Skies

Yesterday's weather was absolutely perfect - crisp, cool, and sunny with clear blue skies. Since I get to work from home on Thursdays, I was able to enjoy it a bit more than if I'd been at the office (where I don't have a single window and I'm on the third floor so quick outdoor breaks aren't possible). Here's the view of the sky from my driveway.

My windows were opened all of Wednesday night and yesterday, but my hair stayed straight and my eyes weren't running or puffy - this translates to no humidity and low allergen levels in the air. Too bad it's going to be 80 degrees again next week. I wish fall would get here already!

If you read the post from September 24th, then you know what Zoe is doing in the next two photos. Her ears are pricked in the first one because my crazy neighbor had just slammed his car door. Zoe hates that neighbor, and I'm not wild about him either. He's the one who rearranges my recycling and always loiters in my yard. Oh, and he barks and lunges at Zoe when I walk her. He thinks it's funny, but one of these days I'm going to let her go and then he won't be laughing! Maybe I'll even train her to sic balls like Chopper.

Address mix-ups & impending bad karma...

Yesterday morning when someone rang my doorbell I ignored it as usual, waited for the dogs to settle down, and then descended the stairs to the front door where I found a neatly folded invoice on my welcome mat. I knew what it was for before I opened it. You see, the people who owned my house before me didn’t have the sense to forward their mail, much less to cancel all of the regular services they had scheduled. So their exterminator service continued for more than a year after I moved in – the occasional invoice left at the door but no payments made whatsoever by me, as not one of those invoices had my name on it.

Then for about 8 months nothing, then the invoices started popping up again, but this time with the wrong address on them. I live in a cul-de-sac, with another cul-de-sac on the opposite side of the cross street. (To prevent myself from being found out by the neighbor, I am changing the street names, but all you need to know is that the street names are similar). My street is Dobson, the opposing street is Dobb’s Way. The intended recipient of the exterminator’s services has the same numerical address as I do, so this is an obvious error on the part of the exterminator. Now let me tell you why I’ve let this continue for so long (although I’m starting to feel guilty about it now that it has been going on for more than a year).

The mix-up between myself and the same neighbor occurred with annoying frequency with respect to packages delivered by DHL. I consistently received packages that were neither addressed by name nor physical address to me. They were always addressed to my numerical twin neighbor on Dobb’s Way. Every time I received one of his packages, I immediately delivered it to him in person or left it on his porch. On one occasion he was home so when I introduced myself and explained the situation, he replied with, “yeah, I think I have some mail of yours.” After sifting through a huge pile of crap on his counter, he handed me a mangled Blockbuster envelope containing a movie I should’ve received more than a month before. (I had reported it as “lost in the mail,” and they sent me another copy, weeks before this incident).

Assuming (likely correctly) that he had no intention of making an effort to return my mail to me on his own, I felt no guilt the first time I realized my house had mistakenly been given his perimeter treatment. I mean really, who knows how much of my mail has been delivered to the Bermuda mail triangle that is the house on Dobb’s Way? I recall one likely instance in particular, which cost me a late fee on a credit card and a huge headache to boot. On top of that, it took 4 phone calls and my insistence to speak with a manager to stop the DHL deliveries - more time than I like to spend correcting an error that really doesn't severely impact my life, and it irritated me that said neighbor NEVER contacted DHL about the problem. Of course most of these errors were facilitated by the mailman and other delivery men, etc rather than my neighbor, but he’s guilty of a far more loathsome thing – sheer laziness, as well as a lack of common courtesy!

So what do you think? Am I a terrible person? No matter what you think, if you utilize any services that do not require your personal signature, I suggest you occasionally confirm that the services are being carried out. After all, my neighbor might not realize his house isn't getting sprayed until he's overrun by roaches!

Barnsie the office mascot

Barnsie was a Christmas gift from colleague Dorothy last year. He came from Barnes & Noble, wearing a green sweater with "Barnsie" embroidered on the chest in gold. She told Jen and I at the time that we were supposed to "dress" him for the changing seasons and use him as our office mascot. (Apparently another colleague has a bear that also has a revolving wardrobe, and we were to be the "competition.") While I haven't purchased any clothes for Barnsie, co-workers have outfitted him well. Actually, he's rather transgendered since he's gone from boyish to very frilly clothes and back again. Before today's new outfit, Barnsie (or Barnsietta) was wearing a skirted one-piece bathing suit and sunglasses.

Kathy bought Barnsie's Halloween attire. The shirt reads, "Little Monster," and we stuffed the witch hat with bubblewrap so it would stand up. It was Jen's idea to add the ant ornament (Christmas gift from colleague Rita last year, seen only in 2nd photo), and I think it rounds out the outfit nicely!

I'm sure I'll get chided for this post, but Barnsie really does draw his fair share of attention. I bet someone brings in a Santa suit before the end of the year!
